Weingut Gunderloch
Crafting the Soul of the Rheinhessen, One Glass at a Time
Where Tradition and Terroir Meet
Nestled in Germany’s historic Rheinhessen region, Weingut Gunderloch has cultivated a legacy of excellence for over six generations. At the heart of their story is the famed ‘Roter Hang,’ a stretch of red-soil slopes steeped in winemaking heritage. With their vineyards perched on the steep, iron-rich hills of the Rothenberg between Nackenheim and Nierstein, the Gunderloch family has embraced the land’s unique character, a place they call both home and muse.
The estate, founded by visionary Carl Gunderloch in 1890, quickly became known for its world-class Riesling, setting the foundation for a relentless pursuit of quality that continues today. Carl’s dedication to fine winemaking led Weingut Gunderloch to co-found the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) and remains one of only four estates with uninterrupted membership in this association. This enduring commitment to quality has been handed down to Johannes Hasselbach, Carl’s great-great-grandson, who carries forward the family tradition with a modern eye.
Johannes, who came to winemaking after studying business and traveling the world, brings both a scientific rigor and a boundless curiosity to his craft. His wines reflect the soul of the Rothenberg’s unique “Rotliegend” soil, with a minerality that weaves through each bottle like a signature. For Johannes, every vintage is an exploration of the Rothenberg’s character—a dialogue between the land and his craft. As he explains, “The Rothenberg is more than just a place to live and work. It’s been a steady friend to each generation of our family.”
With 24 hectares of vineyards, including 12 hectares on the steep slopes, Gunderloch’s devotion to Riesling is complemented by select plantings of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Silvaner, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The Rothenberg’s iron-rich clay and shale infuse these grapes with a distinct mineral backbone, which gives each wine a rare depth and clarity. The family works meticulously in the vineyards, giving the vines what they need—nothing more, nothing less—and the Rothenberg rewards their efforts with wines that balance elegance, power, and nuance.
In every glass of Weingut Gunderloch’s wine, you can taste the legacy, curiosity, and reverence for the land. Each generation brings its own perspective to the Rothenberg, living from it, with it, and for it. Here, the wines are more than just bottles; they’re a story of place, people, and an ever-evolving relationship with the soil beneath their feet.
